Both. Ray is an app available on Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android — download it on any device you own. The Ray Display Series is dedicated hardware for the living room, bringing AI-powered subtitles to the big screen with no setup required.
Most Smart TVs run apps in sandboxed environments with no root access and no direct access to audio or the file system. You cannot run tools like FFmpeg inside a Smart TV app, which means you cannot extract audio from video files — the core step Ray needs to generate subtitles. Even on Android-based TVs, the processors are too underpowered to handle audio extraction from large 4K files in any reasonable time. The Ray Display is built with a powerful processor, 8GB RAM, and up to 1TB NVMe storage so audio extraction is fast.
The display comes with one year of Ray Cloud included free. After that, a Ray Cloud subscription is required for subtitle generation and translation, since processing happens on our servers. We offer affordable annual plans for Display owners, and Kickstarter backers get locked-in pricing for life.

Ray introduces a short delay to the live stream, extracts the audio during that buffer window, sends it to our servers for processing, and delivers subtitles back in near real-time. The delay gives Ray enough context to produce accurate, natural-sounding subtitles rather than choppy word-by-word captions.
Yes. The built-in DVR lets you record any IPTV or FAST channel for later viewing. Recordings are stored locally on the display's NVMe storage and are automatically subtitled when you play them back.
